Film philoSEFFy
Four very up to date pictures of stunning quality – each of which has collected a significant number of awards. But what is also exceptional, are the themes these films tackle.
One of the pictures addresses a global issue – climate change and accompanying questions about the world’s resource stability. The remaining three films touch upon other important contemporary issues by telling stories about intriguing characters. A question about the boundaries of competitive sport – its (negative) impact on professional athletes’ health and mental state and even, indirectly, on politics – is paired with stories of a lower calibre, which nonetheless also greatly influence modern civilizations. A story revolving around art and beauty follows the life of a boy from a poor district of London who’s made a global impact on modern aesthetics. No less touching is the story of a legendary director and her encounter with a young street photographer.

Famous French film director Agnès Varda and a well-known photographer and muralist, known only by his initials JR. They share a common passion for images – questioning the way they are shown, in particular. Varda chose cinema, JR chose to create open-air photographic galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to shoot a film in France, away from big cities. This is how their documentary road movie came to be – a portrait of slowly fading French villages and their inhabitants.
